Interesting concept for a song, love and murder, but Van’s vocal fails to convince. You can hear it as track fifteen on the concert broadcast below. Similar to some of the Versatile cuts, the song starts off a little off key vocally, and is dominated, unsurprisingly, by Joey De Francesco’s Hammond organ and trumpet. You could take a musicologist approach to the album, but that’s beyond my limited knowledge of the medium, so this review should be a short one. If you’re not a fan of the medium, it’s not going to matter how well it’s performed. Overall, the results are better, Van seems a little more engaged, but there’s still some off-key vocal moments, and it’s still jazz. You’re Driving Me Crazy: 2018 Versatile clearly didn’t get all the jazz out of Van’s system, so he did it all again the following year with a de facto proper jazz band this time, hence presumably the co-billing with Joey De Francesco.
